An important step to be taken before installation is to specify the network configuration for each node in the cluster. This involves allocating server hostnames and private interconnect names, public IP addresses, VIP addresses, and private IP addresses. In addition, you will need to establish subnet names, subnet masks, and domain names. In more sophisticated networks you may also need to consider routers. Domain Name System (DNS) servers. Network Information Service (NIS) servers, and Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) servers. Discuss these requirements with your system and network administrators. We suggest that you follow a logical naming convention that is easy to remember. There is nothing to stop you from configuring a host named server1, with private interconnect server2-priv, and a VIP of server3-vip. However, doing so increases the probability of human errors occurring. In addition, if you anticipate adding nodes to the cluster in the future, remember to allow for these nodes in your naming scheme. Ensure that all public IP addresses and VIP addresses are unique within the network and located on the same subnet, and, if required, have been added to your DNS configuration. Table 10-2 shows a sample network configuration checklist for a two-node cluster.

This section describes installation of Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 4.
